ARNS (Automated Real-time Narrative Summaries) ARNS is an innovative natural language generation system developed by CoGenTex for NOAA's National Ocean Service (NOS), for use with their Physical Oceanographic Real-Time System (PORTSŪ).PORTS is a product of NOS's Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS), which collects, analyzes and distributes historical and real-time observations and predictions of water levels, coastal currents and other meteorological and oceanographic data. Below is a sample of a PORTS screen for San Francisco Bay:
The PORTS system currently displays its real-time data in graphical and tabular form. The tabular form can require lengthy inspection to retrieve the relevant details, particularly in a large PORTS locale with many sensors. ARNS will complement the tabular display by providing automatically generated natural-language summaries of port conditions, in order to give users a more comprehensive overview of the data. Beta testing of the ARNS system will begin shortly, with public deployment projected for late 2006.
